Mr Richard Welbourn, consultant bariatric surgeon, answers questions on criteria for obesity surgery, which procedures are carried out in the UK and how bariatric surgery can help with comorbidities.

This module will update you on bariatric surgery, including:

  • Short- and long-term problems that can occur after surgery
  • Which medications patients are typically prescribed following surgery
  • What follow-up patients are entitled to on the NHS if they have a procedure overseas

Mr Richard Welbourn is a consultant surgeon in Musgrove Park Hospital, Somerset, and chair of the National Bariatric Surgery Registry committee. He is also surgical lead in the By-Band-Sleeve RCT, and was a member of the development group for the NICE obesity guidance CG189.
